Tire safety: Goodyear refuses to recall motorcycle tires

Motorcyclists in Arizona who have Dunlop D402 tires on their bikes might want to be aware of the dangers they face. While the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is in the midst of a lawsuit that involves the company's G159 tire that is built for RVs and other low-speed vehicles, it has refused to recall its D402 motorcycle tires. Reportedly, the manufacturer denies that the five deaths and 22 injuries in motorcycle accidents had anything to do with tire safety. The company blames the riders for overloading or overinflating the tires.

Of the many tire-related lawsuits against Goodyear, only two went in the maker's favor; three are still pending, and settlements were reached in eight cases. A mechanical engineer testified that an adhesion defect was identified upon inspection of the D402 tires. An expert witness in 12 of the cases concluded that there were tire defects in all of them.

In one of the incidents in which Goodyear denies liability, a Dunlop D402 back tire blew, causing the rider and passenger to be ejected. The wife suffered multiple fractures, but she survived. Sadly, her husband was less fortunate -- he was catapulted into a post and suffered fatal injuries.

Victims of motorcycle accidents that followed blowouts might be struggling to cope with the financial consequences. Unanticipated medical expenses and other losses such as lost income can wreak havoc on anyone's finances. However, an Arizona attorney who has experience in dealing with cases involving tire safety can provide the necessary support and guidance in a civil lawsuit pursuing recovery of economic and noneconomic damages.
