Why More Tire Blowouts Happen In The Summer

Headed out on a car trip with the kids for your final summer vacation before the school year? Better check your tires first.

Heat can destabilize tires -- especially underinflated tires -- which is why tire blowouts happen with greater frequency between May and October each year. Tire blowouts can be terrifying and dangerous, not only to the occupants of the car, but the occupants of surrounding cars as well.

What causes blowouts?

Tires weaken under stress, and this stress can come from many sources. Underinflated tires are more prone to blowout, as are tires that have uneven tread wear. Driving for long distances at highway speeds with heavy loads also stresses tires because of the heat generated under such conditions.

But tire defects can also be caused by manufacturer or design defects. It can be hard to determine exactly what the reason was for a blowout until someone can examine your tires for clues. If you've experienced a blowout, it's important to keep the tires, because you may be entitled to receive compensation should the accident have been caused by such a defect. Sometimes the defect is just that someone sold you a tire that had been sitting on the shelf for too long.

Doing your due diligence

Of course, you shouldn't be so afraid of tire blowouts that you avoid your family vacation altogether. But you may want to get your tires checked before you go, or at the very least make sure that your tires are inflated the proper amount before you leave. The best way to deal with a tire blowout is to avoid one in the first place.
